A guide to Galaxy repair
Samsung makes a lot of phones, from the Galaxy A series many carriers hand out to the Galaxy S Ultra and the foldable Z series. They share a few common problems, and knowing which one you have makes it easier to get the right price.
Lines, spots, and a dark screen
Galaxy phones use AMOLED screens. When one fails, you’ll often see a bright green or pink line from top to bottom, a black spot that slowly spreads, or a screen that stays dark while the phone still rings. These are faults in the display panel itself, so the fix is a new screen, not a software update or a reset.
A cracked Galaxy screen tends to get worse quickly, because the display under the glass is thin and flexible. If you see lines or spots starting to grow, it’s better to fix it before it stops responding to touch.
Tip Galaxy phones with the fingerprint reader under the screen need your fingerprints set up again after a screen replacement. Keep your PIN handy.
Checking your battery
Open the Samsung Members app, tap Support, then Phone diagnostics, and run the battery status test. A result of Weak or Bad means it’s time for a new battery.
A swollen battery on a Galaxy often pushes the back glass off or lifts the screen from the frame. Stop charging it, keep it away from heat, and bring it in.
Moisture warnings and the USB-C port
If your Galaxy shows a moisture detected warning and won’t charge by cable, the port is wet or dirty. Let the phone dry completely before trying again. If the warning keeps coming back on a dry phone, the port may be corroded and need replacing.
Wireless charging is a good test. If the phone charges on a pad but not with a cable, the port is the likely problem. Read more about charging port repair.
Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold
Folding phones have two screens. The outer screen is a fairly standard repair. The inner folding screen is a more delicate and more expensive part.
The inner screen also has a factory protective layer that isn’t meant to be peeled off. If it’s bubbling or lifting at the edges, ask us before you pull at it, since removing it can damage the screen underneath.
Repair or replace?
Recent Galaxy S models, starting with the Galaxy S24, get up to seven years of Android and security updates, so a two-year-old Galaxy has plenty of life left after a new screen or battery. On budget A series phones the math is different, and we’ll tell you if a repair would cost more than the phone is worth.
Before you bring it in
